A tree that is blown in the storm is kept upright by it roots. Its roots dig deep into the ground to nourish it and support it. Take away its roots and it no longer flourishes. We are the same, our root chakra, situaqted at the base of our spine, is our survival chakra, developping from birth to one year . When our root energy is flowing clearly we are more stable during stress- we are grounded like the tree in the wind, less effected by the stresses of everyday life. It relates to survival at the basic level- food and water to live, shelter and transport. Trust too is here- the baby that trusts that food will be provided from the mother. When we think of the newborn baby, all that it needs to live.
If the root (base) chakra becomes unbalanced, you may feel “stuck” and just can’t seem to move forward in life. You may feel ungrounded, with a low sense of self. This oftenhappens following traumatic events, family problems, death of a loved one, and major life changes. A blockage in the root chakra prevents the release of grief, guilt, and sadness, contributing the the inability to move forward and preventing you from following your destiny.
Common psychological symptoms of an unbalanced root chakra: loneliness, insecurities, feeling ungrounded, unconfident, abandoned, indecisive, depressed, anxious, addictions, phobias, obsessions.
Common physical symptoms of an unbalanced root chakra: lower-back pain, sciatica, varicose veins, constipation, diarrhea, rectal/anal problems, impotence, water retention, and problems with groin, hips, legs, knees, calves, ankles, and feet.
Healing the Root Chakra:
Balancing and opening the root/base chakra allows negative emotions to be released, regenerating confidence and your will to move forward in life. A healthy root/base chakra promotes feelings of security and encourages exploration to find your life’s purpose and achieve success. A balanced root chakra also generates the flow of energy to all other chakras.
Activities to strengthen your root- gardening, walking barefoot in nature, body strengthening excercises.
Stand up straight and relaxed.
Put your feet shoulder width apart.
Slightly bend your knees.
Put your pelvis somewhat forward.
Keep your body balanced, so that your weight is evenly distributed over the soles of your feet.
Sink your weight downward.
Keep in this position for several minutes. Imagine roots coming from your feet into the centre of the earth.
Wear red, the colour of this chakra.
Go out into your garden, throw off your shoes and dance barefoot, see and feel the abundance around you in nature and know that you are part of it.
