Here’s the thing. I hate being pissed off, fearful, and anxious.

Guess what is the fastest way to get me there? If I watch the news! What we are being fed in the media is DESIGNED to stimulate specific responses. The media has spent billions planning how to do this, and they are very very good at it.

Which means. . . we have to start getting very very smart, if we want to live our lives on OUR terms. Dunno about you, but that was always MY plan!

The other day I was noticing how good it feels when I am grounded in the now~ my thoughts are calm, my body feels peaceful, and my mood is content. I don’t feel stressed. I know what I want, and what I don’t want. I am in tune with the natural world. And that’s the way it should be.

I’m grateful I can now feel like this, because it wasn’t always this way. And even now, it’s not always easy. The difference is, now I know what to do. For a long time I didn’t.

Lately I’m hearing more people ask “What can I do when it seems like the whole world has gone crazy? How do I feel like I can cope with everything? I am overwhelmed!”

Here’s what I want to say to them. To you.

First, to paraphrase an e.e.cummings quote: “The hardest thing you will ever do is to be yourself, in a world that tries to make you be anything but that.” Be you anyway! As Lily Tomlin said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.

For those who need some immediate relief and guidance, I offer these 3 ways to help.

1. Understand that YOU are more than this. Realize that “Who-You-Are” is eternal and powerful; you are more than your thoughts and feeling, and more than just your body. You are a marvelous creature of infinite dimensions and capacity.

For example, you are not the feelings you’re having. You are more than that. Stop identifying with what you feel. You are not the thoughts that come into your awareness, either; they are transient, like clouds in the sky. They will change like the wind, unless you grab hold of one and nurse it until it becomes something you never wanted or intended.

We often do this unintentionally, which is why meditation is so good. Through learning how to discipline the mind, you learn how to gain control over your thoughts and experiences. Meditation leads to mastery of your mind and emotions. Start there.

Now, please understand I am not saying to stuff your feelings OR your thoughts. I’m saying don’t attach to them or identify with them. Don’t shut down your emotions. Nope, I’m saying don’t allow your feelings to run (ruin?) your life or make you crazy. Feelings aren’t facts; they are here to help you understand yourself and make decisions that help keep you safe and help you grow. (And no, those two things are not mutually exclusive!)

The thing is, you are not a victim of your thoughts. Or your feelings. Anything that arises within you? You have the power – and obligation – to change it. It may take practice before you are good at it. But you can do it. In fact, it’s something no one else can do for you, even if they wanted to. That is your job. I believe in you. I know you have it in you.

Find creative ways to express your feelings. Find safe people to share them with. Journal. Run. Record a video. Just don’t keep your feelings bottled up ~ and don’t believe everything you feel (or think)! It will change. It always does.

Learning how to take charge of your mind and your emotions will go a long way to bring you the inner peace you crave. Meditation gets you there. If you do not already have a meditation method that works for you, take a few moments and search for “simple meditation techniques that work” and try some out until you are in the groove with one. It will pay off big time, I promise.

Oh and one more thing. Turn off the media. Take a break from the onslaught of negative input. THAT is one thing you can control ~ the TV remote.

2. Get back to basics. Come back to your breath. Notice that you ARE breathing; if you’ve been holding your breath from anxiety, stop that and take a long slow deep breath right now. (Ahhhh. Doesn’t that already feel a lot better? It did when I did it just now. . . ) Use your breath as a way to center, calm and ground. It helps you to notice the here-and-now, and still that frantic mind chatter in the process.

Realize that it is the nature of the mind to produce thoughts. It is your job to decide what to do with those thoughts when they come. You don’t actually have to do anything with them, if you don’t want to. Let them come and let them go. Many of them are nothing more than distractions. Why hold onto those?

When you are working consciously with your breathing, you can better notice that your thoughts are not really YOU. They come and go. You don’t. You are here. Notice where “here” is! Get present in your surroundings, and anchor yourself in the 3D world where you exist.

What does it smell like? What colors do you see? What position is your body in ~ standing, seated, reclining? What is the temperature? What do you hear? Take it all in. Feel it. Become aware of ALL your sensory experiences. This is where YOU are, right here and now. And that is good enough. It’s beautiful. Because from this place, this here-and-now, you are alive and able to BE you. Make sure you notice and appreciate this.

3. Use some cool tools. For me, this would be Smudge. I do what indigenous peoples have done for eons to create sacred space and to clear your energy fields: burn herbs or incense that clears energy. Or use aromatherapy. While in the past I used to burn cedar and sage, now I prefer to smudge with a liquid version of the sacred herbs, because you can take it anywhere (even places where burning things is not allowed or convenient) ~ and because the active properties are amplified instead of consumed.

Also, for some people, the smoke from Smudge or incense bothers their lungs. With the liquid version, you don’t have that problem. Not only does it clear the energy, but it smells nice too!

Here’s a link where you can find what you need (my personal favorite is Organic Liquid Smudge With Sage):

Smudging Resource

Spray some over your head and walk underneath it, like a refreshing “energy shower”. Or, you can spray some into your room to clear all the energy there, and get rid of any negativity or dark energies that may have come or collected.

The liquid smudge is amazing if you commute or travel, to keep your personal energy clear of unwanted energies of people around you. I love it when I travel, to clear the hotel rooms of any lingering energy of anyone who has stayed in that room before me; it also helps clear stale tobacco smells, from smokers who may have been there. (Even if they did not actually smoke inside the room, their smoke clings onto their clothing and belongings, and DOES infiltrate into the room. The liquid smudge is the answer for that.)

So there you have 3 simple ways to get clear and start to live your life on your own terms, no matter what is or isn’t going on around you. I know you can do this, and that each tip I shared with you will help you. Make a decision to change what you can in your life right now, that will free you from the confusion and overwhelm that has been holding you hostage to your happiness.

And on the topic of happiness. . . here is a bonus resource, an article that can help you release more of what’s getting in the way of your happiness and fulfillment:
